Food that makes the party

Here's a simple rule to remember: 6-8 pieces per person when appetizers are the party, 3-4 when they're just the opening act before dinner. Guest count and party length shift it from there — the calculator below does that math for you.

Because nobody ever left a party raving about the decor when the food ran out.

How Much Food Do I Need Per Person?

The question every host asks and nobody answers clearly. We break it down by party type so you show up confident, not guessing at the grocery store.

Holiday Open House, 30 Guests

8-12 pieces per person, roughly 300 total. Guests arrive and leave on their own schedule, so the table needs to look full at 2pm and at 6pm.

2

Backyard Party, 50 Guests

350-400 pieces, replenished as you go. This is a grazing crowd — plan for people eating across the whole afternoon, not just the first hour.

Cocktail Party, 20 Guests

150 pieces total: 48 hot, 36 cold, 42 vegetarian, 24 guest bites. Rotate the hot tray every 30 minutes and the table never looks picked-over

Chef's Notes

Restock hot appetizers every 20-30 minutes. Sitting out too long costs you both temperature and looks.

Variety beats volume. Guests remember the skewer and the stuffed mushroom, not the count.

Overestimate by one dish, not the whole menu. A little extra of your easiest item beats running short across the board.

Vegetarian gets real table space, not a token plate at the end.
